Anime Club Continues in 2026!

Last year, we followed Yunocchi and some other friends through their school lives in an exploration of surrealist slice of life anime. As a fun and maybe a little silly gimmick, I rearranged the episodes of Hidamari Sketch we watched into chronological order, as opposed to their somewhat randomly arranged broadcast order, and separated it out by month so we could follow Yunocchi's adventures in something like real time.

This year we will be continuing this theme with a new slate of supporting shows. Hidamari Sketch loves playing with its yuri overtones, between Hiro and Sae's unspoken but long running relationship, Yuno and Miyako's friendship that might be something more, and poor Natsume always left pining on the outside. The new slate of shows aims to explore some of the series' contemporaries in the yuri space:

  • Maria-sama ga Miteru is sort of the canonical 2000s yuri drama series, centering on life at an all-girls catholic school with a rigid and highly idiosyncratic sister-themed social hierarchy, and a girl whose upperclasswomen keep dragging her into arcane psychosexual schemes.
  • Sasameki Koto is a dramady centering around a group of lesbian schoolgirls misunderstanding each others' desires and frequently mortally wounding each other in the process. Frequently uncomfortable.
  • Maria + Holic is a brain melting yuri work by studio SHAFT lampooning common genre tropes and asking difficult questions like "what if a lesbian was literally allergic to boys" and "what if we made Kobayashi Yuu do up-voice?"

Dates will be decided on social media at the beginning of each month (or by my command decision if the schedule is tight) and a flyer will be created about a week in advance. Expect it to happen on a Weekend night around 5:30pst. You can tune in here if you're interested.
